I've seen some inconsistency in this area. Are we supposed to use present tense or past tense? I'm guessing the latter, but I just want to make sure. BrickfilmNut

I don't think this has been discussed for date articles, so starting a forum (please correct me if I'm wrong). Personally, I'd go for past tense for things in past years (eg "2011: Lego Star Wars III was released"), present if it refers to something on the current day ("2013: LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is released"), and future for things in the future ("2014: LEGO Star Wars V will be released"). Although, I doubt present would be used, since it'd only be valid for one day... NovaHawk 03:03, January 29, 2013 (UTC)

So, it seems we have a consensus. Is it safe to implement this now? User:BrickfilmNut/sig

Not really date articles, but one think I don't understand is why we use past tense in backgrounds when it is referring to an ongoing condition. Could someone explain why? Maybe I am just missing something, but I thought it should be brought up. Berrybrick 20:03, January 29, 2013 (UTC)

Present tense? '200 Jedi come to the arena, and rescue the three prisoners. However, Dooku unleashes his Super Battle Droids. Yoda arrives with a clone army.' User:Captain Jag/sig1 01:11, January 31, 2013 (UTC)
(That one Super Battle Droid must be really super if it's going to take on 200 Jedi and a clone army by itself :D). Umm, do you have an example with the "ongoing condition"? (not completely sure what you mean) NovaHawk 01:15, January 31, 2013 (UTC)
I guess it could be 'Yoda is a Jedi', rather than 'Yoda was a Jedi'- he never stopped being a Jedi. User:Captain Jag/sig1 02:13, January 31, 2013 (UTC)
Kind of, but I meant more in a universe that still has an ongoing story where a state/condition is still valid at the present. Star Wars is, Yoda did stop being a Jedi when he died. For example, Eris and Laval being best friends or Mr. Freeze's condition. Berrybrick 02:18, January 31, 2013 (UTC)
(this is a joke, not a serious point) "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." :P User:UltrasonicNXT/Signature

  • Closing this off (been open for over a year), with the result of past tense for date articles, unless it hasn't happened yet, in which case use future. A new forum about the background can be reopened if needed. NovaHawk 07:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
