User blog:ToaMeiko/Inactivity
Hi everyone,
As you've probably noticed, I've been really distant from the wiki (and all of Brickimedia) lately. Though I would rather not it be this way, I have to say that my activity here isn't likely to improve in the weeks to come. With this, I figured I best inform you all so that my leave of absence doesn't happen with questions left unanswered.
Since I know it's important for you to know the reason for my inactivity, it has nothing to do with the community or any events within it. I've simply been busier than ever with work, and have had little time online besides from my phone while on a job. To those who are curious, throughout the past 2 weeks I've been working as A1 for the local theater's production of West Side Story. This has been a really fun job, but tedious and time consuming, where I'm working nearly 7 days a week and 16+ hours on some days. In addition to that, I've been continually working as an audio engineer at other locations, some of which have required I travel out of town (or out of state) for several days. With my limited time online, I've been trying to find clients whom I can start to work more as a free lance web developer for. Though I've been doing this for the past year or so while also working at Brickimedia, I haven't been getting as much satisfaction from my voluntary work at Brickimedia as I have gotten from being paid as a web development contractor.
Anyways, I know I can't leave this community completely without passing on the boatload of responsibilities I've taken on over the past year. With this, here is a list of things I want to see happen with the areas of the site that I'll leave a gap in:
- I really want to see Berrybrick put up a request for bureaucrat rights, as he has deserved them for a very long time. I'll definitely support him whenever he decides to request those rights.
- I want to see Edward Nigma request adminship. He's agreeably one of the best-suited candidates for those rights and I think he would be able to put them to good use.
- I would also like to see Edward Nigma join the quality check group. That group has been missing some activity that it needs, and since Edward is one of the most constructive users in the mainspace currently, I think it's appropriate he become part of that group.
- Even though the bot approval group is a very inactive group, I believe that Codyn329 should become a member of that if at any time it lacks enough active members. Even though he doesn't know everything about bots, his greatest skill is that he's always willing to learn something he doesn't fully understand, which means he'll be a valuable member of that team when some technical details need to be assessed.
- I'm currently a member of the news team, and though that's an area of the site I hardly focus my attention towards contributing in, I think it does a great job staying on top of things and shouldn't lose any momentum without me here.
- Since I'm the one who has been in charge of running the IRC bots for the recent changes feed for this wiki (and all the other Brickimedia wikis), I'm not going to have the time to continue operating those, so our countervandalism channel will be going defunct for the time being. This also coincides with the fact that our server has been using more resources than it should lately, so hopefully the lack of recent changes feeds will decrease the number of resources being used. I would hand the responsibility of running these bots over to someone else, but it requires root-level access to Brickimedia's server therefore I'm unable to give anyone that responsibility.
- Since I'm a part of Brickimedia's system administrator team, I'll still be paying attention to new issues on GitHub regarding Brickimedia, so I won't be retiring my responsibility there, however the team could really use some more active members (currently at least 2 who are inactive and even more who just don't contribute towards issues and development), therefore I think that MtMNC, Seaside98, or Codyn329 should be considered for system administrator rights in the near future.
- Because I'm primarily the only one to post on Brickipedia's social media sites (Facebook and Twitter), I'm in need of someone else whom I can trust with content creation access on those. Anyone who's interested should either respond in the comments below and possibly in the related forum. I'll still occasionally post to those sites myself, since I can do that from my phone even if I'm not at home.
- On the related note to the above, I'm not going to have the time to manage the recently-introduced marketing department for the Brickimedia Association. Because of this I'm going to just put that user group on hold and will hopefully be able to get it going later in the year.
- Since I've already invested money into Brickimedia in the past, I will continue to do so if it needs any financial boost in years to come.
- Most importantly, I'm still holding the position as board representative for Brickipedia, therefore I will still follow the mailing list and will be available in email or my talk page for any board-related responsibilities I have.
Since I'm not leaving the wiki by choice, I'll still come here whenever I can given I have time and am in the mood to do so. If at any time I'm needed personally for something that can't be handled by any other community member, I will be available on my talk page. If you have any questions about my inactivity or comments about the above list, leave them below and I'll read and when necessary, answer them when I can.
Thanks and kind regards,
