20200 Space Designer is a LEGO Master Builder Academy set released in May 2011.

Content[edit | edit source]

The kit comes with 178 LEGO pieces. Many of these are small plates or curved elements for creating slopes. The largest elements are two wing plates, the cockpit canopy, and a brick separator to take apart models. The set includes six pieces to create the Level One Master Builder Academy Minifigure with helmet, and additional elements to create his jetpack, as well as a plastic storage bin and a Designer Handbook.

Models[edit | edit source]

Three model instructions are included in the designer handbook, and one additional on the Lego Master Builder Academy website. The Models are based off to display sturdiness and horizontal, vertical and symetmetrical building. In addition, the Master Builder Academy website includes downloadable instructions to make a small space pod. The website also includes Mark Roe's "alien lizard-bug", an inspiration model built solely out of the parts in the kit.

Helicraft[edit | edit source]

The first in the instructions is the Helicraft, described as a futuristic evolution of a helicopter with large wings and a split tail. This is the main model of the kit, and also displayed on the box cover.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Built to blast through outer space or the sky over a battlefield planet, the tough and rugged Helicraft is an example of a popular modern design style: sci-fi vehicles inspired by today's realistic technology. With its pod-shaped armored cockpit and extended split-fin tail, it could be a near fuure version of a modern helicopter, but with antigravity engines and photon cannons added to give it a LEGO Space twist.

Afte you've learned the sideways building and locking techniques by finishing the Helicraft, use those skills to update other real vehicles into the spaceships of tomorrow!

Rocket[edit | edit source]

The second model is the Rocket, based after the original rockets of the 1960's but modified to fit the LEGO universe. A unique characteristic of this model is that it has a smoother interface than the others.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. At the dawn of the space age, this is what the future looked like: shining, needle-shaped rockets that launched straight up into the sky, ready for colorful and extraordinary adventures on strange alien worlds out among the stars. It was an era of excitement, hope, and imagination, a science fiction golden age that is represented by the design of the ultra-retro Rocket spaceship.

Sideways building and locking techniques will help you create a model that is no only stable, but so streamlined that almost no LEGO® studs are visible on its surface! Get ready to blast off in 3...2...1...

Space Fighter[edit | edit source]

Third in the handbook is the Space Fighter, a pure science fiction vehicle with an angled wing design. It was developed to have movement and flexibility; the goal was successful by using hinges.

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. The sleek and super-futuristic Space Fighter was designed for maximum speed and maneuverability on missions in distant galaxies. Unlike the realistic Helicraft, this exotic spaceship is pure science fiction, with sweeping curves and angled wings that could be the product of some alien civilization or a new human technology invented many centuries from now.

Creative use of hinges and the Mater Builder technique of sideways building will really come in handy here as you build this model's aerodynamic shape, then use the priniciple of locking to give it stability!

Handbook Content[edit | edit source]

The book’s foreword is written by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, the owner and CEO of LEGO, respectively. The following pages introduce Master Builder Academy and Space Designer, as well as tell about the other kits in Levels One and Level Two and introduce the Master Builders. Following that is the building instructions for the three kit models and minifigure, preceded by information about the techniques used in the kit. After that comes the kit's Design Challenge and Questions about Space Design. The Book's Design Lab focuses on concept art, and the MOC spotlight is focused on Dan Rubin's Eb'cafl spaceship.

Author's Note[edit | edit source]

Red2x2.png This is a description taken from LEGO.com. Please do not modify it. Dear LEGO® Master Builder Academy Member,

Every LEGO® Master Builder starts his or her journey by building and playing with LEGO Bricks around the same age that you are now.

In our company, we take great pride in our LEGO Master Builders. Every day for over 50 years, they have come to work to explore new ways of using LEGO bricks. The core principles and special techniques of LEGO building have been passed on from one generation to another over the years. Our Master Builders employ these skills in everything they create, from police stations to dinosaurs, as well as the giant brick sculptures that you can see in the LEGOLAND® parks. They are an inspiration to us and to builders of all ages around the world.

As young boys, building with LEGO bricks was for both of us a way to bring our imaginations to llife, and we filled many hours dreaming up new creations. Through the LEGO Master Builder Academy program, we will also be proud to share some of the most inspiring creations built by our talented fans, as well as their own special building tips and stories.

Now that you are a member of the LEGO Master Builder Academy, you will learn many techniques and secrets from our LEGO Master Builders, who have come together with the goal of inspiring you to build amazing new creations that you can share with us and your fellow LEGO MBA members.

Together with everyone working in the LEGO Group, we hope you'll enjoy this program, and we look forward to seeing what you can build!

Kjeld and Jørgen
