Venom was the alias of MacDonald "Mac" Gargan while he possessed the symbiote of the same name.
Background
After being rejected by Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote sought a host that shared its hatred for Spider-Man. It found this in Mac Gargan, the Scorpion. Gargan graciously accepted its offer, anticipating the power that it would grant him.
Sometime after bonding with the symbiote, Gargan joined Norman Osborn's Sinister Twelve. The team disbanded after their first defeat, but Venom would stay connected with Osborn.
During the Civil War, Venom was drafted as a part of the Avengers' Thunderbolts to take down Captain America's Secret Avengers. Post-Civil War, he would go on to join Norman Osborn's new team of Thunderbolts.
On one of their missions, Gargan and the rest of the team were called to New York, where they were to hunt down Spider-Man. To do this, Gargan used his ability to sense former hosts of the symbiote, which lead him to the F.E.A.S.T center. There he found Eddie Brock, who the symbiote attempted to re-bond with. Its attempt failed because his skin was now caustic to the symbiote, thanks to Mr. Negative's powers. Shortly after they made contact, a white fluid came out of Eddie's pours, forming the Anti-Venom suit. The two clashed, but Anti-Venom's ability to repel the symbiote allowed him to subdue Gargan and nearly destroy the symbiote. Due to this defeat, Osborn built a new Scorpion suit to battle Anti-Venom and protect the healing symbiote. With it, he was able to take down Eddie. Gargan tried to finish him off, but the symbiote held back to protect its former host. Regaining its strength, it broke through the suit, prompting Gargan to give up.
After the Thunderbolts disbanded, Osborn offered him a spot in the Dark Avengers. As a member, he disguised himself as Spider-Man wearing the black suit.
Gargan was eventually apprehended by Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel. The military claimed the symbiote after his arrest, which they used for Project Rebirth 2.0.
