User blog:Brikkyy13/Creating the LEGO setup of my dreams

From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

I have just finished moving from a tiny apartment to a house, and I now have the room to setup my LEGO collection the way I have always wanted. Due to financial reasons primarily relating to school, I am most likely not leaving home until I have completed my degree, so I have decided to go ahead with the LEGO plan. While starting to work on it tonight, I realized I wanted to document my process, so here this blog is if anyone cares to read along and keep up with it. This will be an ongoing thing, which will definitely take a long time. Hopefully the final result will be worthwhile. Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy it. BrikkyyTalk 11:03, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

It begins

So this is my new room as it stands right now. Hopefully it doesn't stay like this for long. Currently the only LEGO sets I have out are the Ultimate Collector's sets (except the Death Star, which is temporarily out in the lounge room) and two of the newest Star Wars sets which I found discounted while out shopping today. The boxes to the right are all filled with, you guessed it, LEGO. That is everything that I managed to cram into my room in the tiny apartment, plus some more. There are several more boxes in the basement which will be brought up when the time is right.

Tonight's job was sorting through the comparatively small amount of instruction manuals that found their way upstairs. The plan was to put them in some binders, but I don't have enough binders for that already ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. So they're going to be stored in these drawers which are in my closet (in the wall that is not pictured above). There are already some baseplates in one of the drawers, along with some binders. Once my couch/bed has been setup (probably tomorrow) I can begin to reorganize the shelves to my liking, which does include buying new ones for all the extra space I now have. Just a small update to show what's happened over the last month.

After setting up the furniture in my room I brought most of my collection upstairs. Pictured above is about 95% of my entire collection, either partially or completely disassembled. The pile of boxes was dubbed "Mount Diesavirgin" by my "friends" (the right picture is the view from the couch, the TV is dwarfed by the pile of boxes). In between studying I found the time to sort through the boxes and decide what I wanted built or not. What I didn't want to keep was organized into some plastic containers for sorting later (unfortunately I did not get a photo of that pile. It was a touch smaller than the one in the picture above. I think maybe 8 containers of of varying size?)

A couple days ago I got the first new shelf for the collection. It's 6.8ft tall and it's already out of room after emptying the remaining 1 1/2 boxes from Mount Diesavirgin. I'll be getting another shelf soon enough so hopefully I'll be able to tidy everything up. Next up I'm planning to sort through the all the containers and organize all the parts (I can not wait to get started with that. Such fun. /s). I'll also be getting a proper desk and possibly even a coffee table sized display case if a certain rumor turns out to be true...

I will keep updating this as time moves on. I feel like it's turning out nice and it feels great to not be limited by space when it comes to LEGO. BrikkyyTalk 13:01, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

I just realized my computer is showing the date as MM/DD/YYYY instead of DD/MM/YYYY.

I have finally decided to stop being lazy and start sorting. My educated guess is I've done a rough sort for around 15,000 parts. I'm starting by sorting the unsorted pieces into the categories of bricks, plates, slopes, technic, constraction, wheels, minifigure and other. Once that is done, each of those will be broken down into more and more subcategories until I'm left with my collection being sorted by element.

I also have a desk now, decorated with LEGO of course. It is worth noting that the things on display here have changed a few times since I got the desk.

My singular shelf has also undergone some reorganization. Subject to more reorganization if I can scrape together enough cash to get some acrylic for a display case. (Review of the big one soon, I promise. My original plan for pictures backfired and I haven't been able to find a good solution yet.)

The next step is to find a storage system for all the parts. I know I want to go with drawers over those open container things, problem is I don't know how many to buy, what sizes, etc. Updates to follow, eventually.

Your comment took me back for a minute because even though I know exactly where it is on the shelf, I can barely make it out in the photo, then I realized the box is in full view in front of the bagged up Beetle :P

Thanks :) This is gonna be one hell of a task with how much I have
