User blog:Drew1200/A New Brickfilms Wiki?

From Brickipedia, the LEGO Wiki

Hey everyone,

I just recently was able to setup my LEGO sets for the first time in almost two years. I’ve been wanting to get back into brickfilming, and that led me to come up with another idea.

I’ve never been able to find a brickfilming community that I actually enjoyed, so I’m considering founding one. The site will be a wiki, just like this site. However, the main focus will be brickfilms. Whenever someone finishes a new film, they’d be allowed to create an article about it, and use the site to advertise. Everyone else would be able to view the film, give compliments or tips, and hopefully, the site would turn into an enjoyable community.

I’ve asked this same question on the LEGO Message Boards Wiki, and the response was fairly positive. So I’m going to ask the same thing here: Are you interested in participating in a brickfilming site?

Here’s a poll, so I can get some quick statistics. I’d also appreciate it if you’d leave a comment.

Would you be interested in participating in a new brickfilming site?

I have two more comments. First of all, if there is a substantial amount of support, I may propose that the wiki be founded here. Otherwise, I may try and found it on Wikia, and eventually attempt to move it here if it’s successful enough.

Secondly, I need some ideas for names! If you have any ideas, please say so. Here’s the current list of ideas I’ve received:

  • Brickfilms Wiki
  • Brickfilm Database
  • Brickfilm Repository
UPDATE
I've decided to go ahead and start the project. The details (such as name, location, etc.) will be worked out soon. For now, I'll begin working on the policy and logo.

(Just so you know, I'm the sole 'Not Sure' vote currently. I still say go for it.)

Sounds like a great idea, something I think we could really use on the network, although I think it may take a while before it catches on. I'd be more than happy to help out with any templates, etc required, but I wouldn't be making any actual videos myself.

I think that this is a good idea, even if I couldn't contribute much. I do think that founding it on Wikia could be a huge mistake if you ever intend to move it here (or anywhere), based on experience with Customs and watching the LMBW "move".

Yes, that would be main my concern with founding it on Wikia. Depending on the group of people who make up the community, it could become very difficult to move to Brickimedia. So if I do decide to start it on Wikia, it probably won't be a goal to move here for a very long time.

The biggest problem with starting it on Wikia would mean that you'd be creating your competitor from the start. If you started it on Brickimedia with no intention of moving it elsewhere, you wouldn't face competition from sites with the same content, which is currently the problem that all Brickimedia projects face (but hopefully not future projects).

That's also a good point.

Well, it depends how hosting works. If you host the video here (or on Wikia), you are releasing it under CC-whatever, and people can use it for whatever as long as they say its yours. I just figured if that was to happen, unlikely as it is, people would no doubt be unhappy.

Of course, if its just links to Youtube, that isn't an issue.

Oh, I see.

The videos would not be hosted on Wikia or Brickimedia. That would take up a large amount of server space, and could be potentially inconvenient compared to an embedded video hosted through a service like YouTube. My plan would be to encourage users to use YouTube or Vimeo, although other options are available.

Server space isn't really a concern. I'd much rather have the videos hosted on-site for performance reasons. Content licensing isn't an issue. Brickimedia's license is CC-BY-SA-3.0 unless otherwise stated. Brickfilms could easily be licensed differently on meta (like many file uploads are), and the entire Brickfilms Wiki could hold a different content license too.

I think it'd be a cool wiki. I may contribute to it, but certainly not if it were on Wikia.
