CM4Sci (10251 Brick Bank)

I'd like to review 10251 Brick Bank. I have not reviewed any LEGO sets in written form, but I have written up a lot for my MOCs on sites like Eurobricks and LEGO Ideas. (Examples 1, 2, and 3) I think a modular review could be a good personal challenge, and I can promise really good photographs too, as my house has a lot of photo equipment. I understand I do not come on here as often as I used to, but I'm willing to help Brickipedia out with a review, especially if more opportunities like this are out in the future. :)

I'd have to see if I can pay for shipping before sending it out. I'm sure it'd be a yes, though. It shouldn't cost too much.

Please let us know ASAP. Also, as I told Nuff, there might be a policy that you can't sell this set after you are done with it, but I do need to clarify with Meiko. Berrybrick (talk) 15:25, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
Absolutely, as I said it shouldn't be a problem. Also I didn't even consider selling it, I wouldn't sell it. - CM4Sci
Oh, of course not. :P This page just doesn't have all of the disclaimers and information it ought to have yet so I wanted to make sure you were aware. Berrybrick (talk) 02:59, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

Berrybrick (76052 Batman Classic TV Series - Batcave)

Review. Samples of my work are all over the site--though I do have a better camera now so pictures will be okay; not as good as I'd expect from CM4S or Nexus, but okay. There is a very decent chance that I might do a bit of experimenting with the review format, too. I will need time to at least get it built and take pictures before the end of August, however.

Review purposes. I've proved my ability to review, especially these larger sets, in the past - there shouldn't be any issue there. Always good quality pictures, in depth coverage from a neutral standpoint, I'd love to be able to give my two cents on the controversy surrounding this set as well. I know I don't contribute to the site in any productive way anymore, if you want to oppose for that reason alone please do, it's perfectly reasonable and I won't hold it over you. Other than that, thanks for the opportunity guys :D BrikkyyTalk 01:35, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

Since nobody else has brought it up, how will recipients pay for shipping? Will we go directly through the carrier or transfer the money to Meiko through PayPal? BrikkyyTalk 04:56, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

I sent Meiko an email late this (or yesterday now) morning asking about this, contact, LEGO's policies, and what sets we've got for the summer. Hopefully I can fill you in on all that (and more? :o ) soon. Berrybrick (talk) 05:13, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

@Brikkyy13:@CM4Sci: I just heard back from Meiko. I'll be collecting your shipping details (name, address) when requests pass (I'll start by trying seven days, but that sort of seems like overkill). I'd prefer to do that in chat pm, because I was never able to validate my email address properly so I'm not sure contact forms will work. If that's inconvenient for you, I am sure we can find another admin you can email. Whatever happens, the details will be passed on to Meiko who will get quotes on shipping and then you can pay him by "PayPal, Venmo, or other form of payment if it needs to be arranged." So whoever you end up sharing your contact details with, let them know what transaction provider you prefer. In other news, it turns out that Meiko didn't order any summer sets, so unless LEGO offers us some D2Cs, what you see above is all for the year. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up for other sets. And, as you've already been told, you are not to sell the set(s) you receive and we ask that you host your reviews on Brickipedia (at least at first; I'm personally not so peeved about exclusivity) and in your review, you should acknowledge that the set was given by The LEGO Group. I think that's about everything; I'll try to jot down all of this (and more) on another page so it is more accessible. Sorry for any inconveniences the bumpy preliminariness of this has caused. Berrybrick (talk) 02:05, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. ASAP would be great. You can contact me on EB (You're the Fish Oil guy right?) or George can message me on Skype.- CM4Sci
Oh, right. Eurobricks PM would definitely work for me. SuperFishOil. Berrybrick (talk) 02:48, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Usual set review protocol, got it :P Will pass details on once everything has been settled. I don't expect anybody to still have it, but my shipping address hasn't changed since the last review I did, and I'll probably be using PayPal. BrikkyyTalk 12:53, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
So I got Special:EmailUser/Berrybrick working. Unless we make other plans, when your request is passed (I'll let you know on your talk page, and give you a reminder of this) you will use this form to give me your name, shipping address, transactor, and a way for Meiko to contact you; email is easy because I can just forward all of this to him. Try not to be too hard on us. :P Berrybrick (talk) 03:04, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Albus Potter (71011 Minifigures Series 15)

Here are my best reviews:

It has been a long time since I have reviewed a set and am wanting to get back into it with reviewing this series of figures. I also love reviewing smaller sets because I like mentioning small details and that can make large sets take a long time. :P

Jack Phoenix (71040 The Disney Castle)

I've been a Disney fan basically all my life, and as you may or may not know, Donald Duck — both the character and the magazine named after the character — is massively popular in Finland. I had taken somewhat of a too long hiatus from LEGO-related things, but 71012 The Disney Series minifigures managed to pull me back into the hobby for good, because come on, isn't the Donald Duck minifigure just outright the coolest thing you've seen in a long while? For me it definitely was; and some of my other favorite characters from the Disney comics world were there, too (Daisy Duck, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse)!

So what could possibly be better than four of my favorite characters? Well, how about all of them in together, complete with a castle so big and impressive that it'll turn Scrooge McDuck himself green with envy? The Disney Castle is the perfect gift for a Disney and a LEGO fan — but it isn't exactly the cheapest one there is, as with over 4,000 pieces it comes with a hefty price tag. So hefty that I probably wouldn't be able to afford it on my own anytime soon (and by the time I'd be able to afford it, it'd be "rare" or "vintage" item and the prices on eBay and such sites would be doubled or tripled compared to the original price). But now, thanks to the LEGO Group and Brickipedia, I, too, have a shot at owning what's probably the greatest set released within the past 16 years or so!

Given that I'm a boring sysadmin, I'd initially write up a — hopefully interesting and lengthy but not too long — review complete with plenty of high-resolution photos taken with my DSLR. No doubt that this great set would inspire me to come up with something new and far more creative, though! --Jack Phoenix (talk) 22:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

  3. Absolutely. (LEGO actually did use the term "review" in the email, so I don't know if you should technically be doing anything else with it, but I'm sure as long as you wrote a review anything else would be fine.) Berrybrick (talk) 23:17, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Can you give us an example of a review you've written before? Even one written for S@H would do :P BrikkyyTalk 22:40, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

I've been meaning to write this for a while, and I still need to redo some photos that didn't turn out so well, but here's a review of an Adventurers Egypt set from 1998 that I put together not so many weeks ago, for the first time in way too many years. Please take a look and let me know your thoughts on it! --Jack Phoenix (talk) 03:55, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Excellent work! You've got a unique style that works well, can't wait to read more. BrikkyyTalk 07:15, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Glad to hear that you liked it. :) Expect to see plenty more from me in time! Alas, finding all the pieces and putting 'em together can sometimes be a time-consuming effort, so the path to a finished review is not an easy one, at least given my perfectionism and the desire to have a 100% complete set that I'm reviewing without as much as a single missing piece. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 18:31, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Vasko (10254 Winter Holiday Train)

Ever since I saw the Architecture sets were available for review, I wanted to request one, but given that the sets are supposed to be delivered all the way from the USA to Bulgaria (that's where I live) means that the shipping price would be more than the price of the set itself, had I bought it here. But if there actually is a set that is delivered for free, I'm up for the challenge of reviewing it. I've written a few reviews here on Brickipedia, as well as filmed a lot of video reviews for YouTube in the span of a couple of years. I have become familiar with review standards, and I think I can outdo my older reviews. Here's a few I wrote a while back:

I also have a really good camera available for photos. Vasko (talk) 13:14, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Athos (75827 Firehouse Headquarters)

Mine is a mostly selfish request. I would built it first and then take it apart to use the grey to expand either this castle or the village to go around it. The red would be used to expand the village. I have already made plans to double the size, put a train around it and make some motorized movement features. The ghosts would be used to haunt the forest, castle and village. I plan to display the layout with the Lions Club (shameless plug) at a local community Halloween party (this is a shot of a last minute thrown together display and I've been promising something much bigger for this year) and take it to other shows and conventions.

After reading some of the comments and, perhaps more importantly the new(?) -I don't think it was there when I first posted, but may be wrong on this- link to the giveaway guidelines, at this time I am not convinced that I have a proposal that is likely to succeed or conform to the guidelines. I do not believe that my review of a set that has been out for a months and reviewed several times over would benefit the site to any meaningful extent. Quite honestly, the proposal was a bit of a lark (which I think came across a bit too strongly in the proposal) and after the discussions about it, I have kind of lost interest in pursuing it. As such, I withdraw my proposal. If I think of a better project, maybe I'll offer a new proposal. Or hopefully someone will come up with a better idea.

  1. Your old review that you used as a sample was well written, your MOCs are impressive and I really appreciate your honesty of wanting the set purely for parts, however I feel that sending you this set isn't in the community's best interest. I'm sorry to retract my previous statement, but in short, to me it seems like you don't understand the purpose behind allowing community members to have these sets. I know it wasn't entirely made clear to begin with, but the purpose of LEGO sending us these sets is so we can use them in a way that both shows off the sets (almost like advertising) and benefits the community (for us, it would be page views and more users who edit). Everybody who has requested a set has appeared to have knowledge of this fact, you have acknowledged this with "Well, I could do a review," almost as if it were an afterthought. You also mentioned that you would put a sign on your MOC advertising the site, as you estimate an attendance of 300-400 kids, which I feel shows further lack of understanding. Technically the site is considered an AFOL group (even though a good portion of the community are teens :P), and while we are open to new users, often times the younger ones cause more damage than good. I have no issue with allowing people who don't contribute as often as others, or people who don't review to have these sets when they can provide examples of their work (I don't think I've ever seen CM4Sci contribute, and the Brick Bank review was his first review), but without an apparent understanding of the system that's been developed by the community I can't justify my support. BrikkyyTalk 07:23, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
    • I think you raise some good points and someone else might be better suited to use the set. But, the debater in me cannot pass up the chance for a rebuttal. :) The review was kind of an after thought, but I'd still be happy to do one. My comment came more from an understanding that the set has been pretty extensively reviewed (brickset, eurobricks, brickblogger, brothers-brick, brickfan and, apparently, a ton of youtube videos etc.). I think I could, because I am primarily a Lego fan -and not so much a Ghostbusters fan-, put my own unique spin on it, but I don't know how interested people are going to be to read an 11th review by an unknown reviewer. We do have parents come with the kids, but I do not think many (one or two, at most) are actual or burgeoning AFOLs.Athos
    • At this point, all the sets we have have been extensively reviewed, so we are a little late to the party. It's my understanding that these reviews still bring page views, as a lot of people like getting multiple opinions on sets. Just an add-on to my previous statements above; you stated that you're "not so much of a Ghostbusters fan," and I'm not sure if someone without the proper appreciation for the source material could cover a set such as this one (this set is pretty much 4,000 little plastic fan-services) BrikkyyTalk 01:10, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

  • Technically we can't give it to you for a "selfish" reason. If you wrote a review of the set however, you'd be allowed to use it for all of your MOCs and displays afterwards. Berrybrick (talk) 03:27, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
  • That should probably be outlined more in the policy - currently it says "You do not need to write a review: But you do have to do something productive with the set, it isn't just for collecting dust on your shelf; be creative," he is technically being creative :P That being said, the set needs to be used in a way that can bring attention to the site, such as a review. If you can give example(s) of reviews you've done, I would have no issue supporting this request. 203.104.11.76 BrikkyyTalk 04:34, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Thanks. It's sort of alluded to in another part of the policy, but still not clear. I'll fix it. Berrybrick (talk) 04:40, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Well I could do a review, I've never done one before (no, I take that back, I think I did one before for eurobricks for a KK2 set, it turned out kind of crappy, but maybe that was the fault of the set more than mine), but I'd be willing to give it a go, especially if you don't mind my kitchen as the backdrop and a bit of griping about sets lacking a certain je ne sais quoi... If it would help, I could also put up a little sign on the community display saying something like: this layout supported by brickipedia: en.brickimedia.org; or something to that effect. We get, they estimate, 300-400 kids who come through the community party. - Athos
  • Calling out bad parts of a set that's considered good or vice versa generally makes for an excellent review. As for pictures, one of the requirements is that pictures must be good quality. I'm sure you could easily find somewhere more suitable than your kitchen for photographs. BrikkyyTalk 07:23, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
  • I do have a small light box, that would be suitable for at least a portion of the build. And I think I might even be able to convince the wife to let me borrow the kitchen table for a week. I don't, however, think the full model will fit inside the box. Athos
  • Being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian does not make a good review. :S Berrybrick (talk) 14:40, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
  • I didn't mean it like that :P If a review looks at both the bad and the good and considers both to make a decision it generally is a good review; things that are entirely one-sided are not. BrikkyyTalk 01:10, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
  • I obviously have issues getting my point across sometimes (just scroll up a little :P ) but that isn't exactly what you said. Considering both the good and the bad is fine advice. Claiming that what people seem to like is bad and what they don't is good is not, at least not if you approach a piece intending to invent controversy. Berrybrick (talk) 02:42, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Wow, I haven't been around here very much and you've already got a pretty good handle on my personality. I do have a tendency towards contrarianism, but I don't think it would be a problem for a review. Here is an example of not-quite reviews, I did of some ninja sets. I have no problem, however, saying Helms Deep, Orthanc, Rey's Speeder have all be delightful sets. Though, I do find that newer sets tend to lack a certain (undefinable) charm that was present in the mid-1980s. Athos
