The Cretan Bull is a creature from Greek mythology. It is the father of the Minotaur, playing important roles in the stories of Heracles (or Hercules) and Theseus.
Background
According to Greek mythology, King Minos prayed to the gods for a sign from the Olympians that he should rule Crete, the most powerful state at the time, over his brothers. Poseidon answered his pleas and sent a great white bull out of the sea. Minos had promised to sacrifice it if his prayers were answered, but the bull was so glorious that he did not. As revenge, Poseidon placed a curse on Minos' wife, Pasiphae, and she gave birth to a monster which would be known as the Minotaur.
Heracles was sent by King Eurystheus to capture the bull, which had become feral, as his seventh labor. He choked it with his bare hands and sent it back to the mainland, where Eurystheus hid from it. Though he planned to sacrifice it to Hera, she would not accept it, and the bull escaped into Marathon. It would later be killed by Theseus, the eventual slayer of the Minotaur, as he traveled to Athens to meet his father. He sacrificed it to Athena and Apollo, two of his patrons.
Designer's notes
- Sort of a work in progress, but I'm pretty satisfied aside from the hooves.
- This might seem random, but it was made for something which might maybe see the light of the day. I would like for it to.
- This project has since taken life in a medium, so this is almost assuredly not going to happen. If I ever make those Greek mythology sets I've been threatening too for years, the bull might show up there.
