- “Come with me if you wanna not die.”
- ―Wyldstyle
Lucy, also known as Wyldstyle, is the deuteragonist of The LEGO Movie.
Description[edit | edit source]
Normal[edit | edit source]
Wyldstyle's normal version is predominantly black, with some violet and turquoise highlights. The characters "W" and "4" can be seen written graffiti-style on the right side of her clothes, and continues on to her right arm. She wears either a hood pulled up or a hood draped across her back, which shows her black-with-highlights hair.
Wild West[edit | edit source]
In her Wild West version, Wyldstyle wears a long, black-and-light-blue dress which she stole from a prairie wagon. She also wears a skull necklace, and holds a fan.
Background[edit | edit source]
The LEGO Movie[edit | edit source]
Lucy is a Master Builder who was once a pop star and a part of "Popular Band", the band that originated the song "Everything is Awesome". She struggled with insecurity, and changed her name several times before deciding on Wyldstyle. She also colored her pink and blue hair black and adopted a tough-as-nails attitude. Sometime time later, she began to date Batman.
When Lord Business plans to use the Kragle to end the universe, she sets out in search of the Piece of Resistance, the only thing that can disarm it. She nearly locates it, but instead, a regular construction worker named Emmet stumbles upon it. She rescues him from Bad Cop's melting room, and evades the robot forces. She believes him to be "The Special", a prophesied hero that is to thwart the Kragle and save the realms. When she discovers that he is not even a Master Builder, she is upset and jealous that a regular person got to be The Special instead of her.
Lucy and Emmet meet the leader of the Master Builders Vitruvius, who believes in Emmet. They then make their way to Cloud Cuckoo Land to assemble the Master Builders. On the way, they are attacked and rescued by Batman. Lucy and the others arrive at the Cloud Cuckoo Palace, but are soon attacked again by Bad Cop and his robots. They narrowly escape, joined by Princess Unikitty and Benny the Spaceman, in a hastily built submarine. The submarine is destroyed, but they survive in a double-decker couch built by Emmet, which impresses her and the others. After being rescued by Metalbeard, Emmet shares his plan to stop Lord Business.
Over the course of their mission to defeat Lord Business, Wyldstyle slowly grows fond of Emmet. Before they attempt to attach the Piece to the Kragle, Wyldstyle confesses that she had been rude to Emmet because she wanted The Special to be her. Emmet tells her that she is the only person who has ever called him special, and that he wanted to do everything he could to be the person she was talking about. Wyldstyle then reveals to Emmet that her real name is Lucy. Lucy and the rest are captured by Lord Business and Bad Cop in their attempt to attach the piece, and watch helplessly as Business beheads Vitruvius. After he leaves to Kragleize Bricksburg, leaving everyone behind to be terminated, Emmet sacrifices himself to save and free the others. Thinking that Emmet had perished (he really ended up in the real world), a saddened Lucy realizes that if a regular person like Emmet was able to accomplish what he did, maybe everyone else could be inspired to fight back against Lord Business. She sends a message out to everyone in the universe in which she tells them about Emmet, and convinces them to build whatever pops into their head to combat Business' Micro Managers.
When Emmet returns from the real world and convinces Lord Business that creativity is okay, the Piece is finally attached to the Kragle and the universe is saved. Lucy and Emmet reunite and nearly hold hands before being interrupted by Batman. Batman admits that he is the hero she deserves, and allows the two to continue.
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part[edit | edit source]
Shortly after Bricksburg is saved, it is visited by aliens from the planet DUPLO. After Emmet's attempt at peace fails, Lucy attacks them, beginning a five-year war between the two worlds. Constant battle and invasion has toughened the citizens of Bricksburg (now called Apocalypseburg), especially Lucy, who spends a lot of time on top of the fallen Lady Liberty brooding and drinking black coffee. She tries to convince Emmet to "grow up" in order to fit in with the modern, gritty society, but he remains his cheerful, optimistic self.
Lucy, as well as Batman, Unikitty, Benny, and Metalbeard are captured by General Sweet Mayhem and taken to the Systar System. There, they meet Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi who assures them that she is not evil, though Lucy is not convinced. Wa'Nabi plans to hold a matrimonial ceremony in which she weds Batman, and wins over the others with promises of gifts for their cooperation. They are taken to a spa, where Lucy has her hair washed, revealing her true hair colors to everyone, leading the others to suspect that she has a secret past.
Lucy eventually reunites with Emmet, joined by Rex Dangervest, who had set out to rescue her when she was captured. Lucy is surprised to see Emmet appear more mature and tough, but can't understand why she isn't more impressed. Emmet conceives a plan to put an end to the Queen's ceremony in which he destroys her gigantic wedding cake. Emmet then discovers that Lucy's hair is now bright blue and pink as opposed to black. Rex suggests that she is brainwashed (stating that "you can't wash a brain without washing the hair on top"). Emmet decides he can trust her and the three continue with their plan. As Emmet and Rex make their way to the cake, however, Lucy is intercepted by Sweet Mayhem. The two spar until Mayhem nearly falls to her death. Lucy saves her, and discovers that the ceremony is meant to make peace between the two worlds. When Lucy confronts Emmet and tells him this, Emmet refuses to believe it and is now convinced that she has been brainwashed, especially when she tells him that she prefers the old Emmet (he responds saying "The real Lucy would never say that). Emmet succeeds in destroying the cake, which brings forth the catastrophic event known as Armamageddon.
Lucy winds up in the real world, where she sees a human named Finn and his sister Bianca arguing after Finn destroys Bianca's brick-built cake for taking his stuff. Their mother intervenes and orders them to put their entire LEGO collections into storage because they cannot get along. Emmet is taken by Rex, who is an evil version of Emmet from the future, as Lucy and the rest are tossed into a cosmic storage bin. Everyone gives up hope and sings a sad song except for Lucy, who convinces them that there is still hope and turns their song into a happy one. This catches the attention of Finn, who releases them. Lucy rescues Emmet from Rex, destroying his means of time travel and causing him to disappear when he realizes that Emmet will never turn out like him.
Finn and Bianca reconcile and learn to play together. Because of this, Apocalypseburg and the Systar System combine into Syspocalypstar, and everyone lives together in peace. Lucy reveals to Emmet that she co-originated his favorite song, "Everything is Awesome".
Notes[edit | edit source]
- According to Vitruvius, Wyldstyle changed her name multiple times out of insecurity; her other names included Darkstorm, Gemini, Neversmile, Freakface, and Snazzypants.
- A few times in the first film, she is mistaken as a DJ.
- Lucy's Flashback variant doesn't appear in The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, though it depicts what she looked like as a pop star.
